These terms cover the I Hate Perfume app from ihateperfume.com. By using the app, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the app. These terms are also published at https://ihateperfume.com/app-terms/.
Information, not medical advice
The app shows information about ingredients. It is not medical advice and not a diagnosis, and it doesn’t replace a doctor, an allergist, or a pharmacist.
If you have allergies, asthma, skin reactions, or other health concerns, ask a qualified professional which products are right for you.
In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number.
Never a guarantee
The app never says a product is “safe,” and nothing in it guarantees that a product is free of fragrance or of any other ingredient.
- Ingredient flags come from the sources named next to each flag. Those lists may be incomplete. An ingredient that isn’t on any list hasn’t been shown to be safe; it may never have been assessed.
- Labels and formulas change, sometimes without a new barcode. Product data from Open Beauty Facts and Open Products Facts is added by volunteers and may be wrong, incomplete, or out of date. FDA drug labels come from the makers and may not match the package you have.
- Text recognition can misread a label, and a typed list can have typos. Check what the app read against the package.
Always read the actual package before you buy or use a product.
No warranty
The app is free software under the GNU General Public License version 3 (GPL). It comes with no warranty, to the extent permitted by law. The information it shows is provided as is, and you use it at your own risk. Sections 15 and 16 of the GPL say:
15. Disclaimer of Warranty. THERE IS NO WARRANTY FOR THE PROGRAM, TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW. EXCEPT WHEN OTHERWISE STATED IN WRITING THE COPYRIGHT HOLDERS AND/OR OTHER PARTIES PROVIDE THE PROGRAM “AS IS” WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. THE ENTIRE RISK AS TO THE QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE OF THE PROGRAM IS WITH YOU. SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE DEFECTIVE, YOU ASSUME THE COST OF ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR OR CORRECTION.
16. Limitation of Liability. IN NO EVENT UNLESS REQUIRED BY APPLICABLE LAW OR AGREED TO IN WRITING WILL ANY COPYRIGHT HOLDER, OR ANY OTHER PARTY WHO MODIFIES AND/OR CONVEYS THE PROGRAM AS PERMITTED ABOVE, BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR DAMAGES, INCLUDING ANY GENERAL, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE THE PROGRAM (INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOSS OF DATA OR DATA BEING RENDERED INACCURATE OR LOSSES SUSTAINED BY YOU OR THIRD PARTIES OR A FAILURE OF THE PROGRAM TO OPERATE WITH ANY OTHER PROGRAMS), EVEN IF SUCH HOLDER OR OTHER PARTY HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
Some places don’t allow these limits. Where that’s the case, they apply as far as the law allows.
Brand and product names
Product names, brand names, and trademarks shown in the app belong to their owners. Showing them doesn’t mean those companies are connected to ihateperfume.com or endorse the app, or that we endorse them.
Data and links
Product names and ingredient lists come from Open Beauty Facts and Open Products Facts, under the Open Database License (ODbL), and for over-the-counter drugs such as sunscreen and antiperspirant, from FDA drug labels through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s openFDA service, which are in the public domain. Ingredient flags come from the ihateperfume.com label decoder, which names the official source of each flag.
Links to other websites, such as ihateperfume.com, EWG, official sources, and a maker’s ingredient page, open in your browser only when you tap them. Those sites have their own terms and privacy policies.

The app’s license
The app’s source code is under the GPL with additional terms: keep the credit to ihateperfume.com, mark modified versions as different, and don’t use the I Hate Perfume name or logos for them. These terms of use don’t take away any right the GPL gives you.
Changes
We may update these terms. The date at the top shows when they last changed, and the current version is always in the app. If you keep using the app after a change, the new terms apply.
