What the research says
- In a European study that measured the air 182 adults actually breathed over 48 hours, exposure to pine- and citrus-type scent chemicals from cleaning products and fragrances rose with the number of children at home (3-carene median 0.9 to 2.5 µg/m³); the authors attribute this to more cleaning. - In human adrenal cells, eight common fragrance terpenes — eucalyptol, geraniol, carvone, 3-carene, ocimene, both pinenes and dihydro-beta-ionone — cut production of the androgen precursor DHEA by 13–31%, and six others cut the activity of aromatase, the enzyme that makes estrogen, by 22–33%.
